About 6×6 Sudoku

The 6×6 Sudoku uses a grid of 36 cells divided into six 2×3 rectangular boxes. Every row, column, and box must contain each of the digits 1–6 exactly once.

The 6×6 size is popular in schools and puzzle books as an intermediate step between the 4×4 Mini and the full 9×9 Classic Sudoku.

Yes — the same techniques apply: scanning, elimination, and naked singles.

Can kids solve 6×6 Sudoku?

Absolutely. The 6×6 format is well-suited to ages 8 and up.

How to Play Sudoku 6×6

1 Rules

  • Fill every row with the digits 1–6, no repeats.
  • Fill every column with the digits 1–6, no repeats.
  • Fill every 2×3 rectangular box with the digits 1–6, no repeats.
  • Pre-filled clue cells cannot be changed.

2 Strategies

  • 💡 Box Shape Awareness: The 2×3 boxes span 2 rows and 3 columns — one given digit often immediately pins down where it must go in the other row of that box.
  • 💡 Row–Column Cross-Check: With only 6 symbols, listing the 2–3 missing from any row and matching them against column constraints narrows candidates very quickly.
  • 💡 Naked Singles First: In 6×6 puzzles, naked singles (cells with exactly one candidate) appear far more often than in 9×9 — always scan for them before trying harder techniques.

Tip: The 2×3 boxes are asymmetric — always apply both their horizontal and vertical constraints together. Most 6×6 cells yield to simple scanning without any guessing.
